Noh, the Japanese classical drama, is one of the oldest surviving performing arts in the world. Its captivating and enigmatic musical style, known as Hayashi, continues to enchant audiences, from the samurai warriors of ancient Japan to the contemporary business professionals of today. Central to Noh's musical foundation are four instruments: three types of drums and a flute.

With the application "Ohayashi Sensei," users can engage with the intricate music of Noh and even play these instruments in an accessible and enjoyable manner. The app allows you to choose any of the four instruments and begin practicing immediately.

The four instruments featured in "Ohayashi Sensei" include the flute (fue), shoulder drum (kotsuzumi), hip drum (ootsuzumi), and stick drum (taiko). Additionally, users can replicate the yelps and shouts known as kakegoe, which musicians use to synchronize their performances. Each instrument has its own gameplay mode, incorporating visual cues to assist learners in mastering the rhythm of the quintessential Noh melody, chuu-no-mai, while testing their musical abilities.

Developed with support from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, "Ohayashi Sensei" serves as a valuable resource for elementary school teachers aiming to introduce students to the unique instruments and musical styles of Japanese tradition. The app features faithfully rendered representations of each instrument, utilizing sound samples recorded by professional Hayashi musicians at Yamamoto Nohgakudo in Osaka, Japan.
